Aged dogs demonstrate cognitive decline that is linked to brain aging. The
purpose of the present study was to examine if a commercially available
nutraceutical supplement that may be neuroprotective and contains
phosphatidylserine, Ginkgo biloba, vitamin E, and pyridoxine could improve
cognitive function in aged beagles. Nine aged beagles were tested on performance
on a delayed-non-matching-to-position task, which is a neuropsychological test
of short-term visuospatial memory. Our findings suggest that the nutraceutical
supplement can improve memory in aged dogs.

Acetyl l-carnitine plays several important roles in the human body. It shuttles acetyl groups and fatty acids into mitochondriaof brain cells for energy production. The acetyl group of acetyl l carnitine is also used to make the important brain chemical acetylcholine. The mind boosting effect of acetyl l carnitine is often noticed within a few hours. Most people report feeling mentally sharper, having more focus and being more alert. Some find a mild mood enhancement. The dosage can range from 100 to 500 mg in the morning before breakfast.
Fish oils are fascinating nutrients. Almost every aspect of our health, physical and mental, is related to the types of fatty acids that make up our cells and tissue, including vision. And it appears that most of us are not ingesting the right kind of fatty acids, the ones found in fish and fish oils. The active ingredients in fish oil supplements are essential fatty acids known as omega-3 fatty acids. They typically include eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). These fatty acids are found in the lining of brain cells and help these cells communicate with each other. Fish oils have been found to help balance mood, help with focus, and improve vision.
CDP-choline is an intermediate in the production of cell membrane phospholipids. CDP-choline is approved in Europe and Japan for use in stroke, Parkinson’s disease and other neurological disorders. Studies show that CDP-choline helps make phosphatidylcholine in human brain cell membranes in older individuals; may increase acetylcholine synthesis; improves mental performance in patients with Alzheimer's disease; and even improves memory in elderly patients with memory deficits. A dose of 250 to 500 mg can be taken once or twice a week and within hours you are likely to notice being more alert, thinking faster and sharper, with better vision and mood. For long term regular use, the dosage would be less.
SAM-e (short for S-adenosylmethionine) assists the brain in making several neurotransmitter chemicals such as serotonin, dopamine, norepinephrine, and others. Within hours of taking a SAM-e pill in the morning, most people will notice a lift in mood, more motivation, and the urge to be productive. The drawback to SAM-e is that it can cause slight anxiety and restless sleep if you take too much. Most pills on the market come in 200 mg. I think that may be fine to take the first day, but on subsequent days you may wish to take half the tablet and even less. Many people find SAM-e to be as or more potent or more than prescription antidepressants.
Vinpocetine is chemically related to, and derived from vincamine, an alkaloid found in the periwinkle plant. Experiments with vinpocetine indicate that it can dilate blood vessels, enhance circulation in the brain, improve oxygen utilization, make red blood cells more pliable, and inhibit aggregation of platelets.
