Improvement of short-term memory performance in aged beagles by a nutraceutical supplement containing phosphatidylserine, Ginkgo biloba, vitamin E, and pyridoxine.
Can Vet J. 2008. Araujo JA, Landsberg GM, Milgram NW. Department of Pharmacology, University of Toronto, 1 King's College Circle, Toronto, Ontario.
Aged dogs demonstrate cognitive decline that is linked to brain aging. The purpose of the present study was to examine if a commercially available nutraceutical supplement that may be neuroprotective and contains phosphatidylserine, Ginkgo biloba, vitamin E, and pyridoxine could improve cognitive function in aged beagles. Nine aged beagles were tested on performance on a delayed-non-matching-to-position task, which is a neuropsychological test of short-term visuospatial memory. Our findings suggest that the nutraceutical supplement can improve memory in aged dogs.

Best or favorite
Q. Which is your favorite memory supplement?
   A. We don't have a favorite memory supplement since none of them are perfect and address all the issues regarding optimal brain function. We prefer a memory supplement to be a formula with a blend of various herbs and nutrients.

Short term memory
Q. Do you recommend a supplement for short term memory improvement? I am now 52 and I think I am beginning with some short term memory loss.
   A. You could try cdp-choline or acetylcarnitine which work rather quickly but each person is different in which substance they respond to best.

Lifestyle changes for a better mind
Besides a memory supplement, what else would you recommend for memory improvement?
The most important things you can do for a healthy memory is getting a deep sleep at night, keeping stress to a minimum, eating lots of fish and vegetables, and exercising moderately.  These steps will minimize memory loss as you get older. Also, do crossword puzzles, memory teasers, and watch Jeopardy. Look up words you don't know in the dictionary. Memory loss is not inevitable.

Mood herb
Is St. John's wort a memory enhancing supplement ?
St. John's wort would more accurately be categorized as a mood improving herb.

Formula that works
I was curious on what supplement formula would be the best for better memory and brain function, better focus, fatigue, and overall better health.
Each person is different in what they respond to, but a good option, if your doctor approves, is to take Mind Power Rx one day and MultiVit Rx another day and alternate their use. Many people are very satisfied with this approach.

Can you tell me which natural herbal supplements work for cognitive improvement and which one I should try first for natural healing of brain trauma? Can they be taken with Passion Rx?
There are dozens of such individual ingredients and formulas and it is not easy to predict which one will work for you best. The only way to know is to try different ones for a couple of weeks at a time.

Mind and Memory supplements
Mental decline is an accepted and normal process of aging. If you visit your doctor and ask for a treatment for age related cognitive decline, you are likely to get a blank stare. This is because modern medicine does not yet have any prescription pills to treat this gradual loss of memory and mental function. Why is it taking this long? Because pharmaceutical companies are focusing their attention on a mind enhancing drug (a substance foreign to the brain) whereas all the brain is looking for is to replace or enhance some of the natural chemicals that are already found in brain tissue but have declined with aging. Doctors have medications to treat Alzheimer's disease, but even these don't work that well. So, what is a person to do?
Fortunately, dozens of new mind and memory supplements have been introduced over the past few years that promise to improve short term and long term memory loss, intelligence, mood, vision, and mental performance. Most doctors are not familiar with these natural supplements because they are rarely mentioned in the medical journals that physicians read. I have reviewed the very latest research regarding these breakthrough nutrients and offer you a scientific and practical evaluation of some of my favorites.
We have taken all of the supplements discussed in this article in varying dosages and have had feedback from hundreds of users. If you plan to use any of them, keep the following in mind. It is not easy to predict which one(s) will work for you unless you try them if varying dosages for a week or two. Always begin in low dosages to avoid possible side effects. Even if it says on the bottle to take 2 or 3 capsules, begin with one. If you have a health condition or taking medications, discuss with your doctor since it is possible some of these natural supplements could interact with the meds. Don't rely on these supplements for daily use, but take them 2 or 3 days a week. Here is a list of some of our favorite mind boosters, they are all available in health food stores or on the internet.

Acetyl l-carnitine plays several important roles in the human body. It shuttles acetyl groups and fatty acids into mitochondriaof brain cells for energy production. The acetyl group of acetyl l carnitine is also used to make the important brain chemical acetylcholine. The mind boosting effect of acetyl l carnitine is often noticed within a few hours. Most people report feeling mentally sharper, having more focus and being more alert. Some find a mild mood enhancement. The dosage can range from 100 to 500 mg in the morning before breakfast.

Fish oils  are fascinating nutrients. Almost every aspect of our health, physical and mental, is related to the types of fatty acids that make up our cells and tissue, including vision. And it appears that most of us are not ingesting the right kind of fatty acids, the ones found in fish and fish oils. The active ingredients in fish oil supplements are essential fatty acids known as omega-3 fatty acids. They typically include eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). These fatty acids are found in the lining of brain cells and help these cells communicate with each other. Fish oils have been found to help balance mood, help with focus, and improve vision.

CDP-choline is an intermediate in the production of cell membrane phospholipids. CDP-choline is approved in Europe and Japan for use in stroke, Parkinsonís disease and other neurological disorders. Studies show that CDP-choline helps make phosphatidylcholine in human brain cell membranes in older individuals; may increase acetylcholine synthesis; improves mental performance in patients with Alzheimer's disease; and even improves memory in elderly patients with memory deficits. A dose of 250 to 500 mg can be taken once or twice a week and within hours you are likely to notice being more alert, thinking faster and sharper, with better vision and mood. For long term regular use, the dosage would be less.

Vinpocetine is chemically related to, and derived from vincamine, an alkaloid found in the periwinkle plant. Experiments with vinpocetine indicate that it can dilate blood vessels, enhance circulation in the brain, improve oxygen utilization, make red blood cells more pliable, and inhibit aggregation of platelets.

Jiaogulan Chinese herb, sometimes called the herb of immortality and some think is a mind enhancer.
