Benefit of selenium mineral supplement, use with multi vitamin pills, is there a danger in taking more than 100 or 200 mcg a day? What are the risks of taking too little or too much?

The benefit of selenium mineral supplement is that it can provide antioxidant properties. It's possible that a deficiency can increase the risk for cancer. Another benefit of selenium supplement is that it can potentially reduce the risk for cataract by increasing levels of the body's glutathione antioxidant system. If you would like a great daily multi, see multivitamin which has selenium.
However, just like many minerals, excess intake can be harmful. too high an intake may not provide additional health benefits, and perhaps can cause health problems. Minerals have a much higher rate of potential toxicity since it is not easy for the body to get rid of any excess as it is to get rid of excess vitamin intake. For this reason we suggest you not take more than 100 mcg of selenium a day. We also suggest you stop your selenium supplement intake for at least a few days a month.

Benefit for prostate cancer
High blood level of selenium is not in itself generally associated with reduced prostate cancer risk. However, findings reported in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition do indicate that high selenium levels may be protective in certain subgroups of men. Dr. Ulrike Peters, of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, Seattle, and colleagues conducted a study with subjects who were screened for the Prostate, Lung, Colorectal, and Ovarian Cancer Screening Trial. The team compared selenium in blood samples collected before diagnosis from 724 subjects who developed prostate cancer and from a comparison group of 879 similar men who remained free of the disease. The men were followed for up to 8 years. Overall, the researchers found no association between serum selenium and prostate cancer risk. However, higher serum selenium correlated with a lower likelihood of prostate cancer in men who reported a high vitamin E intake (more than the average of 28 IU per day) and those taking multivitamins. Also, for smokers, high selenium levels appeared to reduce their prostate cancer risk. American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, 2007.

Benefit  in cognitive decline and mental function
Selenium levels decrease with age, which may contribute to a loss of neurological abilities and brain fog in the elderly. Dr. N. Tasnime Akbaraly, of Universite Montpellier, and colleagues recruited 1,389 French subjects between 1991 and 1993 for a 9-year study with 6 follow-up periods. At study entry, the average selenium levels in the blood were 1.09 micromoles per liter -- and the average levels decreased by the end of the study. However, cognitive declines were not seen in all subjects. The investigators report that cognitive decline was associated with decreases of selenium over time, after accounting for other risk factors. Subjects with the highest levels of selenium loss had a higher probability of cognitive decline. These findings, along with information on the relationship between brain functions and selenoproteins, proteins containing selenium, support a relationship between selenium levels and cognitive function in the elderly. Their ability to protect against the loss of cognitive function in the elderly needs to be evaluated in a large clinical trial. Epidemiology, 2007.
